OUR WORK
Whole-Home Remodel and Addition in Burns Park, Ann Arbor
A home that had stopped keeping up with a growing family became a bright, open place where everyone stays connected.
THE STORY
What the homeowners wanted, and what we found.
WHAT THEY WANTED
A growing family loved their Burns Park neighborhood, but their home had stopped keeping up with their life. They needed room to eat, sleep, play and grow together. They wanted a bigger kitchen at the center of the home and an open plan with views of the backyard, so a parent could watch the kids play without leaving the conversation.
WHAT WE FOUND
An aging sun porch sat between the house and the yard, blocking light and views. The kitchen was small and walled off from the living space. There was no real mudroom, and upstairs the primary suite had no bathroom of its own.
HOW WE DESIGNED IT
We moved the kitchen into a new rear addition that joins kitchen, dining and living in one open space facing the backyard.
THE INSPIRATION
A growing family that loved Burns Park and their backyard. They wanted more light, long views to the yard and a home that keeps everyone together. White cabinets warmed by wood beams, wood floors and a custom wood hood surround give the modern design a welcoming feel.
THE PLAN
We relocated the kitchen into a new addition at the back of the house. Kitchen, dining and living now share one open, light-filled space facing the yard. The old kitchen became the mudroom the family always needed. Upstairs, the addition made room for a true primary suite with a new bathroom and walk-in closet.
THE OUTCOME
How it turned out
The family cooks, eats and plays in one bright room that looks out to the backyard. Whoever is cooking can keep an eye on the kids and stay in the conversation. Daily gear lands in the mudroom, and the parents have a primary suite with its own bath.

WHAT MAKES IT WORK
Three details that carry the design.

FEATURE 01
A 3D model showed the family how the new windows would open up views to the backyard. Placing furniture, beams and lighting in the model helped them see how the open floor plan would work before construction began.

FEATURE 02
The entire back wall of the addition is floor-to-ceiling windows and doors, bringing in light and a clear view of the yard. A large beam across the house keeps the floor plan open, with no walls in the way.

FEATURE 03
A custom wood hood surround brings warmth to the white cabinets and ties into the wood beams and floors. White zellige tile above the range adds a subtle layer of texture, so the kitchen feels bright but never cold.
