OUR WORK

Mid-Century Modern Kitchen and Laundry Remodel in Ann Arbor

A dark, closed-off kitchen became a bright gathering spot that finally matches its mid-century home.

THE STORY

What the homeowners wanted, and what we found.

WHAT THEY WANTED

This family's home had a strong mid-century modern soul, but the kitchen hadn't caught up. They wanted a brighter, bigger kitchen the whole family could enjoy. The old one was dark and closed off, the eat-in area felt like part of the foyer and the laundry room was oddly oversized.

WHAT WE FOUND

The kitchen was dark and closed off from the rest of the home. The eat-in space felt like it was sitting in the foyer. The laundry room took up more space than it needed.

HOW WE DESIGNED IT

We installed a beam overhead so we could remove a wall and open the kitchen to the family room.

THE INSPIRATION

The home's mid-century soul was already there. The family loved their era furniture, architecture and details, and the kitchen simply needed to catch up. Walnut cabinets with no hardware let the wood do the talking.

THE PLAN

A new beam let us remove the wall between the kitchen and family room. We moved the laundry room wall to make the kitchen longer, with more counter and cabinet space. The new kitchen joins the main living spaces together. A large central island brings family and friends together.

THE OUTCOME

How it turned out

Family and friends gather around the big island, with the kitchen open to the family room. The space is bright and has room to work. The kitchen finally feels like it was always part of this mid-century home.

WHAT MAKES IT WORK

Three details that carry the design.

FEATURE 01

The family already had a beautiful mid-century home, full of furniture and architecture from that era. We designed the new kitchen to blend right in, so it feels like it was always there.

FEATURE 02

Mini-stack mosaic tile adds a textured backdrop to the kitchen. It lets the walnut cabinets take center stage.

FEATURE 03

The cabinets are custom walnut, with no hardware or extra detail. The family wanted a kitchen that felt one of a kind and fit how they use it, and simple wood does exactly that.
