OUR WORK
Craftsman Custom Home in Dexter, Michigan
A blank slate and a long wish list became a craftsman home built for decades of easy living.
THE STORY
What the homeowners wanted, and what we found.
WHAT THEY WANTED
This Dexter family wanted a craftsman-style home that worked as hard as it welcomed them. They wanted open living, lots of daylight, practical storage and a kitchen where everyone could gather. Long-term energy efficiency mattered too, so the home had to perform as well as it looked.
WHAT WE FOUND
This was a ground-up build, so there was no old house to work around. The site, floor plan, systems and finishes could all be shaped around the family's routines and efficiency goals.
HOW WE DESIGNED IT
We centered the whole main level on a gathering kitchen, so family life happens in one open, connected space.
THE INSPIRATION
A family that wanted character and efficiency in equal measure. Layered blue siding, natural stone and an exposed timber truss give the outside its handcrafted look. Inside, warm farmhouse touches meet open, daylight-filled rooms.
THE PLAN
The main level is open, with the kitchen and its oversized island at the center. A generous pantry sits close by. The primary suite is on the first floor for easy living over the long run. A dog-wash mudroom handles the daily comings and goings.
THE OUTCOME
How it turned out
The family gathers around the big island, with daylight filling the main floor. Daily life happens on one easy level, from the primary suite to the mudroom. Geothermal heating and advanced insulation keep the home comfortable and efficient, season after season.

WHAT MAKES IT WORK
Three details that carry the design.

FEATURE 01
Layered blue siding, natural stone and timber details give the outside real depth. The materials are low maintenance, so the curb appeal lasts without a lot of upkeep.

FEATURE 02
Geothermal heating and well-insulated walls and roof cut the energy the home needs. Thoughtful landscaping helps too, so the home costs less to run for the long haul.

FEATURE 03
An oversized island, a generous pantry and layered lighting make the kitchen the natural place to gather. It connects easily to the rest of the main floor, so whoever is cooking is never left out.
