Contemporary Kitchen Remodel in Eberwhite, Ann Arbor
A dark, boxed-in kitchen became a crisp, open space that finally feels like its owners.

At a glance
A kitchen remodel within the existing layout
Eberwhite neighborhood, Ann Arbor
Hanging upper cabinets removed, larger island, custom appliance pantry, white cabinetry, aqua subway tile, white-oak floors
What they wanted
These Eberwhite homeowners didn't need a new layout. They needed their kitchen to feel open, contemporary and like it belonged to them, with better storage and updated cabinetry, countertops and appliances. Dark cabinets and hanging upper cabinets blocked the view to the living area.
What we found
Dark cabinetry and hanging upper cabinets blocked views into the living area. The island and storage plan didn't make full use of the existing footprint.
BEFORE BEFORE
The plan
The layout stayed the same. We removed the hanging cabinets to open the view and replaced the dark cabinetry. The island grew larger, and a custom pantry hides small appliances. Quartz counters, aqua subway tile and white-oak floors finished the update.
Taking down the hanging cabinets connected the kitchen and living area without moving a single wall. The larger island adds prep space and storage and gives family and guests an easy place to gather. White cabinets, Torquay quartz, aqua tile and warm white-oak floors create a palette that is bright and clean without feeling cold.

How it turned out
The homeowners can see right into the living area from the kitchen. Family and guests gather at the bigger island, and small appliances stay tucked away. The kitchen feels bright, fresh and theirs.
