OUR WORK

Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Remodel in Dexter, Michigan

A clunky, closed-in kitchen became a bright gathering space connected to the living room.

THE STORY

What the homeowners wanted, and what we found.

WHAT THEY WANTED

This Dexter family has a bright, welcoming spirit, and their kitchen didn't show it. They wanted a kitchen that matched their style and worked for everyday family life. Instead, it was outdated, cramped and closed off from the living room.

WHAT WE FOUND

A massive TV cabinet blocked the view into the living room. The island was too small, had no seating and left tight walkways around it. A desk unit took up working space the family needed.

HOW WE DESIGNED IT

We removed the big TV cabinet and borrowed floor space from the living room to connect the family's two main gathering spaces.

THE INSPIRATION

A bright, welcoming family deserved a kitchen to match. The design leans modern farmhouse with a polished edge. A soapstone island counter with a beveled edge sets the tone.

THE PLAN

Removing the TV cabinet let us move some floor area from the living room into the kitchen. That made room for wider walkways, a larger island with seating and side buffet cabinets. We switched the sink and range for a better working triangle. The kitchen and living room now work together as one gathering space.

THE OUTCOME

How it turned out

The family gathers around a bigger island with seating. Whoever is cooking can see into the living room. The kitchen finally feels as bright and welcoming as the people who use it.

WHAT MAKES IT WORK

Three details that carry the design.

FEATURE 01

The soapstone island counter is the kitchen's focal point. A beveled edge sets it apart from the clean lines around it, giving the room a one-of-a-kind look.

FEATURE 02

A side buffet counter between the kitchen and living room adds storage and counter space. It's a handy spot for a coffee bar, family keepsakes or a spread when friends come over.

FEATURE 03

Open wood shelves with brass sconces replaced heavy upper cabinets on the sink wall. Everyday pieces stay within reach, and the white subway tile and black-framed doors keep the look bright and modern-farmhouse.
