OUR WORK

Golf Garage and Screened Porch Addition in Eberwhite, Ann Arbor

A worn-out garage and an exposed patio became a golf hangout for every season and a screened porch for warm days.

THE STORY

What the homeowners wanted, and what we found.

WHAT THEY WANTED

These homeowners live on a compact lot near downtown Ann Arbor and love to entertain. They wanted an outdoor room attached to the house and a separate space built around a custom golf simulator. Their one-story garage needed to be replaced, and the open patio gave them little shelter or comfort.

WHAT WE FOUND

The one-story, two-car garage needed replacement. The open patio had potential but offered little shelter or comfort. On a compact lot, every bit of space had to work.

HOW WE DESIGNED IT

We rebuilt the old garage as a two-story retreat, with a golf simulator upstairs and storage below.

THE INSPIRATION

Golf season never has to end. The homeowners wanted a real place to practice through Michigan winters and more room to entertain. A modern, transitional look and matching exterior forms keep the new garage in easy conversation with the house.

THE PLAN

We added a screened porch to the house for three-season backyard living. A new two-story structure replaced the old garage. Upstairs holds a golf simulator, kitchenette, half bath and golf-bag storage. Below is real storage, and the new building matches the main home's style.

THE OUTCOME

How it turned out

The homeowners practice their swing all winter and host friends in their own golf hangout. When the weather warms up, the screened porch is where everyone gathers. The new spaces feel like they were always part of the home.

WHAT MAKES IT WORK

Three details that carry the design.

FEATURE 01

A custom golf simulator lets the homeowners practice through Michigan winters. It doubles as a place to entertain, so a round with friends can happen any day of the year.

FEATURE 02

Dark blue cabinets, a sink, dishwasher, golf-bag storage and a powder room fill out the upstairs. Guests can stay for hours without heading back to the house.

FEATURE 03

Exterior forms and transitional finishes tie the new garage to the original home. The new structure looks like it belongs, not like an afterthought.
