Cheerful Burns Park Kitchen

A small, dark 1920s kitchen was opened up to the rest of this Burns Park home and filled with light.

Cheerful kitchen remodel in Burns Park, Ann Arbor by Forward Design Build Remodel

At a glance

  • A kitchen remodel

  • Burns Park, Ann Arbor

  • Wall between kitchen and dining room removed, peninsula with casual seating, new cabinets and contemporary finishes

What they wanted

These homeowners loved their charming 1920s Burns Park home, but not the kitchen, which was closed off from the rest of the house. They wanted sightlines to the other rooms so whoever was cooking could still be part of what was going on, and they wanted a kitchen where more than one person could cook and prep at the same time.

What we found

As is typical for a house built in the 1920s, the rooms were completely compartmentalized. The kitchen was small and dark, and the layout simply wasn't practical for how this family lives.

The plan

We removed the confining wall between the kitchen and the dining room. In its place we built a peninsula with casual seating, which bridges the more formal dining space and the working kitchen and gives the second cook a place to land.

New cabinets and more contemporary finishes reflect the family's personality and bring the home into this century, while respecting its historic charm. The design rendering and inspiration below show where the palette started.

How it turned out

The kitchen is now part of the house instead of a room at the end of it. Light reaches in from the dining room, the peninsula is where everyone gathers, and two people can cook without stepping around each other.

Curious what this would look like at your place?
